How do you properly taste wine?

How do you properly taste wine?

Tasting wine doesn’t have to be complicated or technical. For us, it’s not about perfect descriptions or technical terms, but about attention and curiosity. Anyone who takes a bit of time will discover much more in the glass – with no prior knowledge required.

The first impression: the colour

Before we smell or taste the wine, we look into the glass. The colour gives clues about style and ripeness. Is the wine pale or more deeply coloured? Clear or rather intense? Especially in white wine, colour often indicates whether the wine is fresh, ripe or has already developed some age. It’s not about evaluation, but about perception.

The aroma: what rises from the glass?

When smelling, the character of a wine often reveals itself. We swirl the glass gently so the aromas can unfold, and we take our time. Does the scent remind you more of fresh fruit, of herbs or of something mineral? There’s no right or wrong – what matters is what we perceive ourselves.

The taste: the first sip

With the first sip, we let the wine linger briefly in the mouth. What matters is not the quantity but the sensation: does the wine feel light or full-bodied? Fresh or more rounded? Which impressions remain? Often a second sip is worthwhile to better place the nuances.

The structure: balance in the glass

Structure describes how a wine feels overall. Acidity brings freshness and tension, alcohol provides body, extract adds substance. A good wine feels balanced – nothing dominates, everything interacts. It’s precisely this balance that makes a wine pleasant to drink.

Enjoy wine instead of analysing

For us, wine tasting is not a test but a moment of calm. By consciously smelling, tasting and comparing, you develop over time a sense for your own taste. And that’s exactly the point: to experience the wine in the way that suits you best.

Whether at home, enjoying a glass with food or sampling different wines – a little attention is enough to significantly enhance the enjoyment.
