Good wine doesn’t need complicated rules, but a few basics help you enjoy it as intended. With proper storage and the right service, you can bring out the best in your wine – without much effort.
Ideally, wine should be kept in a cool, consistent environment. Large temperature swings can unsettle the aging process. For most wines, cool storage is better than too warm. If you don’t have a wine cellar, the cooler part of your home or even the refrigerator can work well for shorter periods.
Bottles sealed with natural cork are best stored on their side to keep the cork moist and airtight. With screw caps, orientation matters less – the key is undisturbed storage without vibrations.
The right serving temperature has a big impact on taste. White wines served too cold often seem closed; served too warm, they lose freshness. It’s better to serve them slightly cool and let them open gradually in the glass. The same applies to fuller-bodied wines: a few minutes in the glass can work wonders.
When opening, take your time. A properly placed corkscrew and a steady pull are all you need. After opening, let the wine breathe briefly so it can unfold. A decanter isn’t essential but can be helpful for more structured wines.
A good glass supports the wine without altering it. The shape is more important than the design: a bowl that narrows slightly at the top concentrates aromas and makes both bouquet and flavor more perceptible. And of course, glasses should be clean and free of any residual odors.
For us, enjoyment always comes first when storing and serving. By following a few simple basics, you create the best conditions to experience wine in a relaxed and mindful way – without any perfectionism.
